Wilmlsow Sports 40th Party

26th April 2008

Holiday Inn Manchester Airport

A warm muggy evening saw the combined Wilmslow teams meet up for this important fixture at a new ground for the club, the Holiday Inn. The 8.00 kick off threw a few players resulting in some late arrivals, but luckily the ref held back the start until all the players were in place.

A well disciplined team saw the Wilmslow teams served a variety of fare; although the vast majority were unable to remember their orders and took what ever came their way! The 160 guests were well behaved on the whole, with the referee not showing any cards, and even some veterans of the club and previous managers were given the opportunity to appear for a once every 40 year special occasion. More drinks than usual were consumed throughout, must have been the heat!

The half time raffle was well supported and the winner can look forward to a Sale Sharks match next season.

Team manager Neil Griffiths showed off his new skills in the middle of the park, and fleeced his team mates of considerable funds to benefit the players of the club, with star auction items including shirts from United and an Elano signed City shirt.

Some fancy footwork was demonstrated in the second half as the younger players took to the field, DJ Lawrence keeping them under control with a variety of favourites from the 60's through to the current day. The less able (and the harder of hearing) retreated to the bar, and demonstrated skills of a completely different kind, although their balance and poise was under question towards the end of the game.

The result was very one sided with the beneficiaries being the Wilmslow Sports players. It was great to see so many people who have been associated with the club for a number of years and the current squad's managers and parents out in force to support the team.

Next fixture: To be arranged!

A message from Neil Griffiths - Club Chairman

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone associated with Wilmslow Sports Junior Football Club a successful and enjoyable coming season. I was delighted to be asked to succeed Charlie Hill as Chairman for the coming season and would like to place on record the whole club’s thanks to Charlie for his tremendous contribution to the club stretching back over many years.

This is an exciting time for Wilmslow Sports in what is our “40 th” anniversary of providing organised junior football in the Wilmslow Area. This Club has never been in better health, this year running 17 teams and with plans already advanced to start running teams at an under 8’s age group as well.

Whilst the general health of the club is not in doubt, we still face certain challenges. Last year following an increasing number of unsavoury incidents, the club issued a zero tolerance code of conduct. As a club we will continue to expect everyone associated with the club to behave appropriately and the club will not hesitate to take the strongest action against anyone who transgresses. Poor spectator/parent behaviour is a blight on junior football in the UK and we at WSJFC are determined to be at the forefront of eradicating this from the sport.

As a club, we are constantly seeking to provide better facilities, coaching, kit and opportunities for our players. This does mean that our cost base is constantly rising and this year we have faced large increases in costs for pitches, Astroturf, coaching and referees. As a result fees have had to go up to £120. We still believe that this cost represents incredible value when you work out what the players receive: (Around 30 coaching sessions, 24 plus games, kit, each player will receive a new jacket, referees fees, pitch hire etc) Our research indicates that our subs are amongst the lowest in the area with some clubs charging up to twice as much. Even at a £120, the club is budgeted to run at a deficit this year and we need to ask all of you to support all our fundraising efforts. Also if any of you have access to sponsorship through your companies please let your team manager know.

Our plans for this year include having closer links with our chosen coaching partner PFC, building on our relationships with local schools particularly the High School and looking at how we can have closer links with the local community in general. Whilst we are delighted that many of our teams play in the top divisions of the local league system, we are equally proud that we continue to provide organised football for children of differing abilities with an emphasis on fun and teamwork.

I and the other helpers in the club are always open to new suggestions. So if you want to have a say and help the club in any way please contact me or any of our managers or volunteers, a full list is on our web site at http://www.wilmslowsportsjfc.org.uk/

Have a good season.

Neil

Congratulations to Joe Kirk, Will Batterbury, and Will Swift for being selected for the Timperley JFL Under 13’s Inter League Side.

Together with players from Broadheath, Fletcher Moss, Wythenshawe, Unicorn & Ashton upon Mersey the boys recently took part in the prestigious UMBRO International Youth Tournament which was held at the University of Manchester playing fields at the end of July.

Despite having never previously taken to the field as a team, and with many of the players selected playing out of their normal positions, the boys took on teams from as far a field as Malaysia and Ireland and managed to reach the final of the plate competition despite enduring a penalty shoot out along the way.

There, playing their 7th game in four days, they lost out by the narrowest of margins to a strong Reddish Vulcan’s side that coincidently have this season joined the top flight of the Timperley League.

In the coming months the Inter League side, ably managed by John Kennedy, will play similar representative teams from other leagues in the Manchester area. Full details of which will appear on this website.
